The Chinese ‘Science & Technology Abstracts Newspaper’ under the leadership of China’s State Science & Technology Ministry has published a paper that may deeply damage the Biotech industry worldwide.

The published paper titled ‘Must face up to the harm caused by imported GM soybeans to the health of 1.3 billion Chinese people’ was written by Lieutenant General Mi Zhenyu, Vice President of the Academy of Military Science of China.
The paper shows that members of the Chinese Government have now realized that GM soybeans are causing health damage to their population, which may lead to a looming total ban on all GM soybean imports.
One of the main points in the Paper reads; “China must adopt strong preventative measures to assure bottom line protection for the life safety and health safety of the people”.
China is currently the largest importer of Roundup Ready Soybeans from the U.S. and Brazil and the main export market for GM soybean farmers in all GM soybean producing countries. A list of 100 Chinese companies that have imported 60 million tons of GM soybeans was recently leaked to the Chinese media.
The Full Source Article will be published by Sustainable Pulse in English when it is made available.
Soy is unhealthy in any form not just GMO type. I think it’s way past due for a real food revolution. We have the power, we just need to use it!
This is nothing that GMO activists haven’t known for many years.
That GMO soy may induce allergies has been a “no brainer” for many years.
Perhaps the American “scientific” community may someday catch up with the rest of the world!
This is great news. Soy should not even be in a minuscule fraction of what it’s in today, organic or not. By the way, I know the pun wasn’t intended, but love that the website is called Sustainable Pulse (and legume)…
On top of the GM soy, there’s air and water pollution on top of miserable living conditions for the have-not Chinese. They have a lot to do to clean up their act if they want a healthy population.
I would like a link to the original Chinese news article. I prefer to read news myself, than have someone with an agenda report it to me.
If you can read Chinese, I’m sure the name of the paper is in the picture. If not, I’m not sure if you could read the original article.
It indicates at the end of the article that it will be made available in English. Why have you “liked” the poster of this article if you don’t trust their news sources Delores? Maybe you should go out on your own and get updates about the progression of GMOs and labeling for them.
If soy is so unhealthy, why is it that these Asians that know so much more about ‘qi’ (natural medicine) than us Westerners have been continually using it as a staple for thousands of years?
I think the article is referring to genetically modified (GM) soy, not regular soy.
1. Asians eat only a moderate amount of fresh soy (e.g. tofu) regularly.
2. Harmful effects of soy (phytoestrogens) are mostly removed after fermentation, which is the form frequently eaten in Asia (e.g. miso in Japan, furu in China).
Sorry to burst bubbles, but this will not cripple the global biotech industry. It is an opinion piece by a retired military officer, not a scholarly paper or official government position. It is not even well-argued.
Meanwhile, the government has indeed turned back some shipments of unapproved GE grain, which has been a hassle for the giant grain trading firms. But they are simultaneously developing their own GE varieties, and it seems likely that they just want to hold off on approvals for foreign-copyrighted seeds until their own varieties are approved and on the market.
The most one could say about this article is that it proves that the debate over GE soy is still raging in China. And they are such a huge market that what happens there has huge global implications. Activists and researchers there need all the help they can get!
What i find particularly humorous is that masses of ignorant people blame the crops themselves for causing disease.
It’s not the genetic alteration that makes you sick. It’s the huge amounts of glyphosate absorbed into the resistant plants.
So perhaps you should be going all-out against pesticides since that’s *really* the cause of the problem.
Or you know, continue to be a toolbag and complain about the growth of plants.
They go hand-in-hand. It is the new chemical farming culture.
GMO crops have Round up in every cell in their makeup so that they can withstand the application of Round up and not die from it. It is highly toxic to living things, especially people. The crops do indeed have the bacterium in them. You don’t know what you are talking about.
Especially bees.
Chinese has been eating non-GMO soy for years but in very small quantity and often in fermented form. Soy was actually considered food for the poorest Chinese to eat. Now soy is in everything.
I like the general’s generalization “causing health damage” which is devoid of semantic content.
Truth is in the major shift in health for the 40 something aged people who grew up on these foods. The major seed companies do not allow any scientific research into these effects so how can you get your required evidence unless your people at age 40 are sicker than their parents were at that age?
Several years ago I started getting immediately and very ill when I ate soy. I cannot eat it now without ending up in the emergency room if someone is around to call the rescue squad, because I totally collapse and cannot see.
My illness seems to have started around the time that GMO soy became widespread, although I had no inkling at the time.
This soy reaction prevents me from not only eating in Asian restaurants (my favorite) but also canned tuna, all frozen dinners, all bakery items, all frozen bakery items, cottage cheese, all mayonnaise, and all packaged foods—because they contain soy. This is only a partial list. Many fruits and vegetables are now GMO.
With GMO foods multiplying rapidly, I soon will not be able to eat anything at all.
My life and health depend upon my being able to identify non-GMO foods. My health food store tries to do this, but sometimes they are lied to by manufacturers and suppliers. And with GMO crops polluting non-GMO crops, who really knows?
Monsanto and other agrichemical companies should be charged criminally. Since they have bought off all state and federal regulators and legislators, that is not likely to happen. Monsanto and others have already killed many farm workers around the world and have gotten away with it.
My future looks very dim.
I have cyst in my left breast and tumors on my uterus and I am white probably from eating this GMO food that I wasn’t aware of until this Feb 2014 if I would have known I would of never ate or fed gmo food to my children.
