Judge Overturns Mexico GMO Maize Ban in Tragic Ruling

Posted on Aug 20 2015 - 6:18pm by Sustainable Pulse

Mexico’s XII District Court has overturned a 2013 ruling that prevented biotech companies, including Monsanto and Syngenta, planting genetically modified (GM) maize in Mexico.

The decision has been appealed by Acción Colectiva del Maíz and will not come into force until the appeal/s have been heard and ruled on.

The tragic ruling follows two years of 93 appeals by the Biotech Industry after the planting of GMO Maize was banned in September 2013 by the Twelfth Federal District Court for Civil Matters of Mexico City. Judge Jaime Eduardo Verdugo J. cited “the risk of imminent harm to the environment” as the basis for the decision.

The 2013 judge’s ruling also ruled that multinationals like Monsanto and Pioneer were banned from the release of transgenic maize in the Mexican countryside” as long as collective action lawsuits initiated by citizens, farmers, scientists, and civil society organizations are working their way through the judicial system.

The group fighting for the GMO maize ban, Acción Colectiva, is led by Father Miguel Concha of the Human Rights Center Fray Francisco de Vittoria; Victor Suarez of ANEC (National Association of Rural Commercialization Entertprises); Dr. Mercedes Lopéz of Vía Organica; and Adelita San Vicente, a teacher and member of Semillas de Vida, a national organization that has been involved in broad-based social action projects to protect Mexico’s extraordinary status as a major world center of food crop biodiversity and as the birthplace of the original varieties of maize.

Monsanto should be dismantled and their money confiscated
and distributed to those they have harmed. They are a bad
company with regard only for company profit.

If a Mexican Judge turned his back on his own people it should indicate the lack of spine and ease of corruption I thought originated within parts of our system has mutated and spread toward our Southern Hemisphere.
As long as we and other nations proclaim the sanctity of the Law there will be nothing short of a political revolution to bring about a reversal of these onerous and humanly dangerous decisions.
As long as money reigns the likelihood of change short of armed insurrection to our south is slim.
We still have some rights but there is no assurance with low voter education and turnout the rest of the world will have the ability to stop the multinational march and unless we here turn the representatives of big business out of office I don’t have much faith the needed change the rest of the world as well as ourselves need will take place.
I am afraid there will be a zombie future for our kids and we will be the ones they blame.

The only ones who can say they aren’t robots are those who register and vote against this steady loss of freedom.

Our family ONLY grows or eats organic. Our health drastically improved once we committed to being GMO free. All our blood work mysteriously NORMAL after being GMO free! Tragically, my sister has stage 4 lymphoma at age 46.
This ruling means our family wont be buying any crops or packaged foods from Mexico. It also means we wont eat in any Mexican restauraunts in USA too!
